City Overview

  Cypress

Cypress (Harris County) is on U.S. Highway 290 twenty miles northwest of Houston in northwestern Harris County. Various Atakapan Indian tribes once inhabited the area, but they quickly died out when white settlers moved into the area. German immigrants began settling along Cypress Creek in the 1840s near where some Anglo-Americans were already ranching. In the 1980s many of the original settler families were remembered through streets and schools that bore their names, like Huffmeister Road and Matzke Elementary. During the late 1800s, rice and dairy farming communities with one-room schoolhouses began to emerge. Two such schools of significance were located in Cypress and an area called "Gun Island" by the wagon trains because of the gumbo mud which was common during the spring season and an obstacle to travel. In 1896, C. W. Hohl founded the school in "Gum Island," later renamed Fairbanks, which includes an area where district schools Bane, Dean, and Holbrook are now located. The first class consisted of 12 students. The people of Cypress built Big Cypress Schoolhouse, No. 2. Dist. 6, also referred to as "the Cypress School," in 1884. The Cypress School was erected on the site where Lamkin Elementary now stands.

The Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District was formed in 1939 when the communities of Cypress and Fairbanks consolidated their educational programs. Cy-Fair Independent School District has been one of the area’s major attractions and has a reputation for quality. With more than 55,000 students, this public school district is second only to Houston ISD in enrollment size within Harris County. Citizen commitment to education has permitted the District to provide the staff, facilities and programs that have produced a reputation for quality learning experiences. Many of the 34 elementary schools and 12 middle schools have received outstanding performance awards from the Texas Successful Awards System. The six high schools graduate students with test scores and college enrollment ratios that exceed state and national averages. Cypress Fairbanks ISD

Cypress enjoys an excellent quality of life, superior education, diverse and affordable housing, recreation, culture, and a favorable business environment. Its "main street," a seven lane state highway, winds through residential and commercial developments, past cow pastures and by both prairie and forested acreage. Nationally known golf courses are nestled among stately stands of century oaks and pine trees. There is a strong housing demand in Cypress because of its pleasing amenities, it's highly acclaimed and exemplary schools, and it's close proximity to Houston's huge job base.

More than 200,000 residents in Cy-Fair enjoy Houston's performance halls, convention facilities and major sporting events but unwind at home in well-appointed neighborhoods such as Lakewood Forest, Lakewood grove, Longwood, Fairfield, Coles Crossing, Cypress Creek, Canyon Lake, Riata Ranch, Tuscany, Village Creek, Glennloch Farms, Thousand Oakes, Stable Gate, Prestonwood, Cypress Point and many others, where homes range from $100,000 to more than $800,000.
